Special Inspector – Soils & Concrete New York City | Building, Transportation & Infrastructure Projects Bureau Veritas is seeking a Special Inspector – Soils & Concrete to join our growing New York City team. This position offers the opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of building, transportation, infrastructure, and heavy civil construction projects throughout the five boroughs and surrounding metropolitan area. This role is ideal for a Civil Engineer, Structural Engineer, Geotechnical Engineer, or experienced Construction Inspector who enjoys field-based work, technical problem-solving, and ensuring projects are built in accordance with applicable codes, specifications, and quality standards. The Special Inspector will perform field inspections and testing activities related to soils, earthwork, foundations, and concrete construction in accordance with NYC Building Code Chapter 17, project specifications, and industry standards. The successful candidate will be responsible for verifying construction quality, documenting inspection activities, communicating findings to project stakeholders, and supporting compliance throughout all phases of construction. Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform special inspections of soils, earthwork, foundations, concrete placement, and related construction activities.
  • Monitor construction operations to verify compliance with approved plans, specifications, project requirements, and applicable building codes.
  • Conduct field observations, testing, sampling, and documentation in accordance with project requirements and industry standards.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports and maintain accurate project records.
  • Communicate inspection findings, deficiencies, and corrective actions to contractors, project managers, engineers, and clients.
  • Coordinate with project teams to resolve field issues and support project schedules.
  • Review construction documents, shop drawings, and specifications as required.
  • Ensure compliance with NYC Building Code Chapter 17 Special Inspection requirements.
  • Maintain adherence to Bureau Veritas quality standards and safety procedures.
  • Support multiple projects simultaneously while meeting reporting deadlines and client expectations.

Required Qualifications: Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • International degrees must be accompanied by a recognized U.S. degree equivalency evaluation.

Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of construction inspection experience within New York City.
  • Experience inspecting building, transportation, infrastructure, utility, or heavy civil construction projects.
  • Working knowledge of NYC construction practices and inspection requirements.

Required Certifications: Candidates must possess:

  • ICC Soils Special Inspector Certification OR Civil Engineering Degree

And at least one of the following:

  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I
  • ACI Concrete Construction Special Inspector
  • ICC Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector

Technical Knowledge

  • Familiarity with NYC Building Code Chapter 17 Special Inspections.
  • Understanding of soil classification, compaction testing, concrete placement, reinforcement inspections, and foundation construction.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Knowledge of applicable ASTM, ACI, ICC, and related industry standards.

Additional Requirements

  • OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety Certification (Required)
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification (Preferred)
  • Current training in fall protection, scaffolding and ladders, and work-zone safety.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to travel throughout the New York City metropolitan area.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and active construction site conditions.
  • Ability to climb ladders, walk uneven terrain, and safely access construction sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional ICC, NICET, ACI, or related special inspection certifications.
  • Experience with transportation, infrastructure, bridge, utility, or heavy civil projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and electronic reporting systems.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
