Sports Broadcasting Assistant

GENERAL STATEMENT The Sports Broadcasting Assistant supports the activities of personnel engaged in broadcasting sports news or sports events for 22 West Radio. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Plans broadcast coverage of all sports event broadcasts on 22 West Radio, including but not limited to men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, volleyball and soccer.
  • Prepares and manages programming schedule for sports departments.
  • Is responsible for the fulfillment of contractual obligations between ASI, 22 West Media and Long Beach State Athletics.
  • Directs or arranges for setup of sports remote broadcast equipment and facilities.
  • Recruits, trains and provides support for student board operators and student play by play announcers.
  • Supports and guides a team of volunteers acting as reporters and correspondents for the radio station.
  • Directs preparation and broadcast of sports news and related commentaries, including any campus news or sports broadcasting on 22 West Radio, or cooperative programming (22 West Video or livestreams).
  • Plans for and arranges engagement of personalities to serve as guest commentators for special events or programs.
  • Participates in broadcasts and interviews during sports broadcasts.
  • Promotes 22 West sports programming through marketing and 22 West Sports social media.
  • In coordination with Station Program Assistant and Student General Manager, identifies, recruits and trains future sports talent.
  • Attends the biweekly staff meetings and submits a weekly report following guidelines supplied by the Student General Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned, reasonably within the scope of the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and/or Experience A minimum of one year of college coursework, or 3–6 months of experience or training in sports broadcasting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous volunteer experience with 22 West Media preferred. Must be a current and active CSULB student enrolled in a minimum of 6 units. Knowledge and Abilities To perform this job successfully, an individual should have an above-average knowledge of college sports including but not limited to; basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball and water polo. Additionally, knowledge on Internet software and Microsoft Office, Google and Adobe Creative applications. Must also acquire proficiency in Station Playlist Pro and Adobe Audition software through participation in mandatory training. Must also complete training on FCC broadcast regulations regarding content. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak effectively before groups of students, customers or employees of organization; ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. OTHER QUALIFICATIONS Schedule This position is a temporary, one academic-year appointment aligned with the CSULB academic calendar. The work schedule generally follows standard business hours. Scheduled hours may fluctuate depending on departmental needs. Occasional evening and weekend support is required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
